Why You Should Consider Artificial Grass For Your Backyard

Why You Should Consider Artificial Grass For Your Backyard

Whether you’ve just moved into a new house or you’ve been settled for a while, one of the trickiest things to work out is what to do with your backyard. You don’t want all of this space to go to waste, but you also might not want to spend a huge amount of time sorting out your garden.

One option is to use artificial grass to make your lawn look neat and green, but without a lot of the hard work. If this is something you’re considering, here are a few reasons why artificial grass could be the answer.

Speedy Installation

If you’ve ever had a turf lawn put in your backyard, you know that it can be a lot of work and it can take a lot of time. Whether you grow grass by seed or you get turf brought onto your backyard, you need to make sure that it’s in good condition, it roots in properly, and then you need to babysit it for a while and sometimes top it up with grass seed and plenty of water to keep the lawn nice and healthy.

Basically, it takes a lot of work and investment to make sure your natural grass lawn actually survives and looks good.

But an artificial lawn, on the other hand, is much easier to install. All you need to do is get artificial grass installers to put the lawn down. Then, usually within a day, depending on how large the area is, it’s sorted for you.

Super Low Maintenance Lawn

For many people, the most compelling reason to invest in artificial turf is the easy maintenance. You don’t need to mow the lawn. You don’t need to worry about watering the lawn in the summer (unless you want to cool it down). You don’t need to worry about patches or weeds in the grass.

All you need to do is get it installed, and other than some minor maintenance jobs that we’ll cover later, it’s pretty much done.

A Durable Option

Artificial grass is great for pets and children because it can withstand a lot of abuse. Admittedly, you still shouldn’t light fires on your artificial lawn or anything like that, but the same applies to natural grass as well.

In general, if you want a lawn that looks good even if your kids have been running riot, artificial is a good option. It can last for up to 20 years, especially if you look after it.

Ideal For Sports at Home

Speaking of kids, little kids and adults alike might want to play sports at home, especially if you have a large lawn. Natural grass can get muddy or waterlogged, and it will definitely get damaged during certain sports like soccer.

There’s a reason why a lot of sporting fields have switched to artificial turf, and that’s because they’re often a more weather-proof option for sports. You can play sports outside even if it’s been wet or particularly cold, and you don’t need to worry about the condition of the lawn.

Quick and Easy Curb Appeal

A neat lawn, whether it’s natural or artificial, can do wonders for the curb appeal of your home. Whether you want to sell up and you want a quick and easy way to sort the exterior of your home out before you sell, or you simply want to make your property look nicer inside and out, artificial turf is a fantastic way to go.

Artificial turf looks exactly the same all year round. So, in the summer, it won’t look yellow because it’s parched. In the spring, you won’t have to battle weeds that keep cropping up. In the winter, you don’t need to worry about your grass dying off and going brown. It’s the same nice green color, no matter what.

You also have loads of flexibility in what kind of turf you choose. If you want your grass to look more natural, you can choose a color and a length that suits you. Or if you prefer the very neatly manicured look, you can get a shorter grass length and a more uniform color. The most important thing is that you’re happy.

Less Mess at Home

Natural lawns have one major downside, and that’s mud. If it rains and someone walks across the lawn, they don’t just damage the lawn; they might also get mud all over their shoes. That mud can get inside your home and create more mess to clean up. But with artificial grass, you don’t get any mud, so it’s easier to keep shoes and homes nice and clean.

How to Look After Your Artificial Lawn

Of course, while artificial grass is easier to look after than a natural lawn, it doesn’t mean you don’t have to do anything at all. If you want it to last, it helps to keep an eye on it. But you don’t need to worry about the constant maintenance of an ordinary grass lawn.

For example, leaves and other organic matter won’t just vanish from your artificial lawn. If they fall onto the lawn and you want to keep it neat, you should clean them up. If you leave them alone, they can eventually damage the drainage system of your artificial lawn and potentially encourage weed growth. You can use your hands, a broom, or even a leaf blower; just keep your lawn clean and tidy.

Over time, the blades of your artificial lawn might look a bit flat or trampled. To prevent this, use a brush to keep them upright and looking nice and natural. Do this as and when you need to, but avoid doing it during the winter and especially if you have snow on your lawn.

While weeds are rare, they can still work through the membrane. In this case, simply pick them out or use weedkiller. If your grass gets stained, you can clean it with hot, soapy water, especially if you have dogs that use the turf as their personal toilet.
