Why Your Driveway is an Eyesore & How to Fix It

Why Your Driveway is an Eyesore & How to Fix It

One of the first things people notice when they look at your house from the outside is the driveway. After all, they have to use it to get to the front door. The driveway can improve your home by elevating its curb appeal (how it looks from the road), or it can do the complete opposite. Many people ignore their driveways and don’t realize what a disservice they’re doing to their home! So, how do you make a driveway that’s ugly look better? Thankfully, there are many ways, depending on what’s causing the unsightly appearance. Let’s look at the most common scenarios and the solutions.

1. Cracks, Potholes, and Uneven Surfaces

Cracks and holes are unsightly. They can also be rough for your car to drive over, making for an unpleasant daily experience. If you have kids or older guests, they might trip over an uneven surface with holes, too. The driveway can also look older than it is. The cracks could widen over time as well.

Small cracks and potholes are straightforward to fix. Simply seal hairline cracks and fill holes with the appropriate materials to prevent them from getting worse and protect against water damage. For cracks and uneven areas that are larger, you may need to replace parts of the driveway or resurface the entire area. Small dips can be filled with a compound.

2. Poor Drainage and Pooled Water

Puddles of water, stains, and eroding materials can make the driveway look bad. It can make the driveway appear neglected, so your house and garden won’t be as attractive as you’d like. If your neighborhood has rules about how your home ought to look, or if neighbors all keep their homes tidy, they won’t like that your place seems dirty.

Also, when water sits on your driveway instead of being diverted after it rains, it can accelerate damage. Installing proper drainage systems, such as trench drains, helps redirect water away from the driveway surface. These solutions prevent pooling and long-term deterioration of driveway materials.

3. Faded or Stained Driveway

The sun’s strong rays can damage the driveway, causing the asphalt or concrete to fade and lighten over time. Plus, oil and grease from cars can leak onto the surface, staining it dark in spots. In damp areas, mold, moss, and algae can grow, making the area look ugly.

Removing dirt, moss, and stains is often possible with pressure washing when done correctly. Keeping the machine’s nozzle from being too close to the concrete reduces the risk of damage to the driveway. Try using a stain-specific formula to remove oil and grease stains; the stain is often easier to remove when the treatment is left to sit for up to 30 minutes before scrubbing and rinsing.

4. Outdated Materials

Over time, styles change, whether in your house itself or in exterior elements, such as the driveway. Older asphalt, for example, can look weathered and stained over the years.

When your house for sale looks older from the outside, which includes the driveway, you are less likely to get people booking times to see the interior, as they assume the house needs a lot of updates. Your driveway may also look plain. You could add tile or stone to create a unique design. Decorative concrete is something more homeowners are doing to improve curb appeal. You can also fix any drainage issues at the same time that you do the update.

5. Overgrown Driveway Edges

It can get messy when grass, weeds, and vines creep onto the driveway from the surrounding grass and garden beds. Plus, uneven edging can look sloppy if you’ve hastily cut the grass. Even if the driveway itself is clean, it can look bad if the edges are not tidy.

The solution is to clean up the edges, obviously. Pulling weeds by hand is the best way to keep them away long-term, and the easiest time to do so is after the rain. Take the time to trim the grass around the edges of the driveway for a clean look. If you plant bushes or flowers, keeping them a few inches away from the concrete or asphalt helps maintain a cleaner driveway appearance.

Concluding Words

A driveway that is an eyesore is embarrassing and can also be a sign of deeper problems. The issue could be cracking, poor drainage, or an outdated design, to name just three examples. Solving the problem helps your house stay in its best condition and makes a great first impression every time, no matter who comes to the front door.
