Things to consider when making big changes to your home

Things to consider when making big changes to your home

Making big changes to your home is very exciting. There are so many possibilities, with plenty of changes you can make. You could pay to have a new kitchen installed, add an extension to the back of your home, completely redecorate a room yourself or commit to a full renovation (although this may be the most costly option).

When making changes to your home, there is a good chance you’ll increase the value. It will certainly make your home more sellable, if you want to sell in the future. But with that all being said, there are some considerations before you start ripping out the walls or hiring people to come in to change a room.

First off, you have the costs to consider, so setting a clear and realistic budget is essential. You’ll also need to prepare for some level of disruption to your daily life, particularly if work involves key living areas or structural changes. For larger projects, planning permission or building regulations approval may also be required, and you will need somewhere to put all the things you are throwing out - Red Dog Dumpsters may be able to help with this!

Below is our guide on making big changes to your home. Keep on reading to learn more about the different considerations and help make the process as easy as possible for you.

Your budget

Sadly, many things in life come down to your budget. Making big changes to your home will have high costs attached to them, meaning this will have an effect on your decision-making and what changes you are going to go ahead with. Before making any decisions, make sure you get multiple quotes to ensure you are getting a good price. Putting together a detailed spreadsheet to track costs can also help, as this stops you from going over budget. If you don’t want to use a spreadsheet, there are many online budget tracking apps you can use, which are very helpful.

How long do you want to stay in your home?

A question to ask yourself is how long do you want to stay in your home? Before committing to major changes, consider whether your home is a long-term investment or a short-term one. If you are planning on staying for a long time, then you may be willing to invest more money into your changes than if you are planning on staying for the short-term. If you’re likely to move in the near future, it’s worth thinking about how your changes will appeal to potential buyers - this way, you are likely to sell quicker, and you may add some value as well.

Disruption to your life

When you make big changes to your home, it will affect your daily life. Depending on the changes, it could result in your kitchen being out of use for a month or your living room being inaccessible for a few weeks. This can be frustrating, so you want to do it at a period where it will cause the least disruption, for example, not working on your kitchen when Christmas is approaching. It’s also worth noting that big changes will be noisy, so if you work from home, you may need to consider this.

Choosing the right people for the job

Unless you can do the changes yourself, you will need to call in some help. Getting help isn’t always easy, as you need to find the right people to do the job. Take time to research builders, designers, and tradespeople, and always ask to see examples of previous work. If you know anyone who has gone through a renovation recently, it is always recommended that you ask for some recommendations, as these people will be more trustworthy. If you don’t know anyone who can recommend someone, then sites like TrustPilot or Checkatrade are a good place to look.

Making your home more energy efficient

Technology has jumped through hoops over the years. When we say this, we mean it’s improved hugely and with these improvements, it's affected the home renovation space, with a lot of new technology available for you to use to make improvements with. Today, there is a wide range of innovative solutions available that allow homeowners to make meaningful upgrades, improving energy efficiency while also enhancing comfort and long-term value. A couple of simple examples include adding smart lighting or smart heating systems. Smart lighting can be a way to make your home look less tired, as you have more flexibility with the warmth of the lights - you can even buy bulbs that completely change colour.

Functionality of trends

We all want a trendy home, but sometimes you’ve got to consider the functionality that will suit you instead of how it looks. A layout that looks beautiful online may not be practical for everyday living. Storage is always an area to put some emphasis on, as well as durable materials, such as having high quality carpets installed. When you focus on functionality, you will often find the changes will last longer, as trends do go out of fashion, some quicker than others.

When you make changes to your home, it will be stressful, but like we said, you will also love it. There is nothing better than getting to pick new designs, choose new furniture and see the change once it’s done. Just be wary of the different considerations to ensure the whole process goes as smoothly as possible - the last thing you want is to overspend and not have enough money to complete the job. But we are sure you will be fine ,and we hope everything goes smoothly for you.
