What Can You Do Yourself in a Bathroom Renovation?
Bathroom renovations have a way of making people feel very confident, very quickly, and honestly, the internet has a lot to do with that. Well, probably has most to do with it, honestly. So, there’s so many YouTube videos and TikToks now showing these bathroom before-and-afters where somebody goes from sad old tile to this gorgeous finished space in what feels like five minutes, a ring light, and pure confidence.
So yeah, it’s really easy to watch a few of those and start thinking that maybe this actually isn’t that hard. Maybe it’s just paint, a new mirror, a better faucet, a few shelves, and that’s it, bathroom fixed. Which, sure, sometimes when it comes to creating a luxurious bathroom, it can be as easy as just swapping out the decor, well, sometimes. But bathrooms are also one of those rooms where things can get expensive fast if somebody gets a little too inspired.
Not to be rude here, but that’s actually the issue. It’s not just a room that needs decor and a fresh coat of paint. It’s a room full of water, tile, steam, wiring, plumbing, and all kinds of stuff behind the walls that can become a complete headache if the wrong thing gets touched. Plus, it’s technically one of the most challenging rooms to renovate (and renovations are technically not the same thing as styled). So, what could you safely change in ehre then?
The Cosmetic Stuff is Usually Fine to Tackle Yourself
This is usually the safer, more satisfying part anyway. Usually its things like painting the walls, changing the mirror, swapping out cabinet hardware, replacing the faucet, putting up shelves, changing towel bars, adding better storage, all of that can make a bathroom feel much nicer without turning it into a construction site. Plus, it helps that these, visually speaking, will immediately transfer to the bathroom too, which really helps. Plus, it might be nice to know that usually these little changes aren’t all that expensive either.
Don’t Get Confident with Tile, Showers, and Tubs
For the most part, this is where a lot of people get in over their heads, because tile really does look more doable than it actually is. Also, the same with tubs and maybe even the same with shower surrounds. It all looks very straightforward when somebody online is cutting clips together and making it seem as though the whole thing just magically came together with a snap of a finger. Even tutorials on YouTube will make these projects look easier than they actually are. But no, don’t get confident with this; ideally, don’t do these either.
Sure, a lot of people look at bathroom remodeling cost and will jump at the sheer thought of spending that much on a professional, but it’s worth it. Think about it, if you mess up, not only are you paying for a renovation, you’ll be paying for a repair too.
Stay Away from Electrical and Plumbing
This is the part where the little “how hard can it be” voice really needs to be ignored. No, really, because it’s hard. When it comes to both of these, the smallest little mistake can be costly, as in electrical fires, damaging the structure of your house, risking mold, all of these are such giant risks that you really shouldn't take them. Seriously, just get a professional, ideally one that's insured.
