Renovation Decisions You Won’t Regret in Five Years

Renovation Decisions You Won’t Regret in Five Years

It’s great when it’s time to renovate because it’s the chance to start over and make your home more like you again - especially if over the years things (including your own taste) have changed. But once you get past the initial excitement of the idea, you’ve really got to  think about making sure whatever you choose is still going to look good and work well a few years down the line - the last thing you’ll want to do is start all over again in a year because trends have changed and you chose to use them in your design. With that in mind, here are some renovation decisions you won’t regret in five years.

Invest In Structure, Not Just Style

It’s easy to get carried away with things and spend all your time, energy, and money on the finishes, the paint colours, the tiles, the lighting, the carpets, and so on. But although they’re important, it’s wise to ensure you’ve got the structural upgrades in place first - everything else can come afterwards.

If you pay attention to improving insulation, upgrading drainage, strengthening foundations, and fixing underlying issues, that’s going to go a long way - and last a long time - even if you’re not going to see most of it. Solid groundwork, especially when working with experienced companies like Richfield Concrete, can even prevent bigger problems in the future, so it’s definitely worth planning for.

Improve Layout Over Decoration

Repainting is a really easy thing to change later on, but moving walls around isn’t, and if your renovation gives you the chance to improve how your home flows and its overall layout, that’s usually something you’ll want to prioritise.

If you do, you could end up with better storage, wider doorways, practical kitchen layouts, and sensible room proportions, all of which are things you’ll appreciate every single day. And of course, a home that really functions isn’t going to date as quickly as one that’s only following trends.

Choose Timeless Materials

The great thing about choosing natural materials is that they’ll last both physically and visually because things like wood, stone, quality concrete finishes, and neutral palettes tend to hold up much better than big, bold choices that feel good now but won’t for long.

Of course, that doesn’t mean your home has to be plain and boring - far from it. But you do have to be careful about committing to something very specific that might feel tired in a few years, meaning you’ll have to start all over again a lot sooner than you’d imagined.

Think About Maintenance

Some finishes look stunning but they need constant upkeep, and others are more forgiving - guess which ones we’re going to recommend?

Five years from now, you’ll be grateful for surfaces that are easy to clean, durable flooring that can deal with daily life, and outdoor areas that don’t need repair after repair after repair. After all, surely your renovations are there to make things easier, not cause lots of chores you didn’t have to do before?
