4 Things To Remember About Insulating Your Home For Summer

4 Things To Remember About Insulating Your Home For Summer

Property insulation isn’t just a matter of making sure your walls are filled and your home’s features have been fitted properly. While they make up the bulk of the job, there are a few more things to be sure of just before a big change in temperature is sure to hit.

And seeing as the summer always seems to make our homes warmer than the winter makes them cold,  it’s best to get these out of the way now while you’ve still got the chance!

So before you down your garden tools for the summer and get ready to enjoy the heat, sunshine, and blue sky, save a bit of your energy for ensuring your home is well sealed and ready to take on the temperature! Keep the four insulating tips below in mind and have a quick whip round of your home to ensure they apply.

Get Your Windows Covered Properly

What are the curtains in your house like? Maybe they're a bit short for the window length, or don’t cover the entire window from side to side? If you can see a gap when you’re standing next to it, where the sun can break in and still warm your home up, your curtains aren’t going to be very effective at keeping the temperature low during the summer!

Which makes now the perfect time to take these drapes down and replace them, either with longer, thicker curtains or with a set of made to measure blinds. Both are good at preventing sun rays from baking your rooms a little too well, and your home will end up much better insulated this year!

Make Sure Your Entry Points are Airtight

You don’t want your home to be totally airtight, of course, but you do need to plug any big gaps where air is going to file out in its droves. Gaps under doors are usually a big offender here, but you should check that the door is hung properly in the first place. If the bolts have come loose, they’re going to need tightening or rescrewing in to ensure the door frame doesn’t become a very expensive airflow leak over the next few months.

Don’t forget about the garage door here either, if you have a garage in your home. Does the door work without rattling? Does it take its sweet time retracting after you press the button? Both of these things can be signs you need to contact a garage door repair company, and we highly recommend you do so before the summer gets into swing. If the garage door isn’t sealed properly, it’s going to be the biggest air leak in the whole house!

Create Some Outdoor Shade

Outdoor shade can range from a variety of things, including placing sunshades and/or awnings over your windows on your property’s exterior, or planting tall trees on the side of the house that is sun facing.

Both methods used together tend to be most effective, but if you only have space for one, that’ll work fine enough. Indeed, with some outdoor shade preventing sun reaching the interior in the first place, you’ll never be one step behind in the battle to keep your home feeling cool enough for you. Beat the sun at its own game!

Maintain a Consistent Temperature

Not only does this make it easier to adjust between the outdoor and indoor temperature, but it’s just a lot cheaper! If you’re not adjusting the thermostat every so often to keep the temperature at a lower level, your HVAC system won’t have to work so hard.

That’ll keep your summer bills from soaring too high, especially if the hot temperatures last longer than you expect them to. Instead, just put it at one constant level that’s good all year round.

Stay Cool Indoors This Summer

Keeping your home cool throughout the summer can be difficult, even when you have a fully working AC unit in the property. You don’t want to have to rely on cooling air all season long, and that’s where some complementary insulation actions will come in handy!

Make sure you use the four above when you’re trying to keep your space temperate and livable, even when the heat soars and makes even the indoor air feel heavy.

Cover the windows properly, make sure your air gaps are sealed and plugged, try to create some outdoor shade to catch the worst of the rays, and keep a consistent reading on your thermostat.
