Home Maintenance Checks to Tick Off In The New Year

Home Maintenance Checks to Tick Off In The New Year

New Year, New You. Right? Spoiler alert: you're probably just fine as you are. But your home? It might be the place that needs a bit of TLC once the festivities are out of the way.

If there's a heap of maintenance tasks you've been putting off, or you need some ideas of what to address in the new year to keep your home functioning, safe, and secure. We have some home maintenance jobs to take care of to keep things running as they need to be.

Clear the Drains

No one likes a clogged drain or backed-up sewer, and for the most part, drains don't block frequently with proper use or care and attention. Throwing some cleaning products down there every so often can do the trick to help budge any buildup and remove nasty odors.

But with an increase in food and drink over the holidays comes more debris making its way down your pipes and your toilets, and possibly baths and showers will be subject to more use that can block them.

Get a drain cleaning company out to go through any issues you might have and ensure you're not putting your home and your health at risk from backed-up drains.

Clear the Gutters

As you're taking down your festive decorations, check the gutters on the roof. Or even get up here to check anything like lights you're leaving in situ, and give them a once-over.

Your gutters can get blocked from multiple things — debris blown in during high winds, animals, or even roof materials if your roof sustains damage. A quick look by either yourself or from a gutter company can remove anything that can cause issues and keep things flowing as they need to be.

Fencing Checks

People don't always notice fencing issues until the fence fails, but you can tick this quick and usually painless task off your to-do list in the new year. This one is especially important for families with pets so they don't accidentally escape.

Take a walk around your perimeter, check that all fencing is safe and secure in the ground, it's not moving, nothing is loose, and there's no damage that's been sustained or sections that have deteriorated over the year. You don't need to check too often unless you experience extreme weather conditions, but a quick check in the new year can put your mind at ease.

Deep Cleaning

The new year is the perfect time to have a good clean. Whether it's sorting the kids' toy rooms out for everything they get over Christmas or you're deep cleaning as you take one decoration, make a list, definitely check it twice, and get those areas sorted you've been putting off.

Under appliances, under furniture, touchpoints like door handles, switch plates, inside cupboards, light fixtures, etc. You know the places.

Again, you can bring in a cleaning company to do a one-off deep clean for you, or you can break it down and do it in parts as and when you have time, but that post-Christmas as clean will always hit different and help you start the new year off on the right foot.
