How to Create the Ideal Bedroom for a Good Night’s Sleep

How to Create the Ideal Bedroom for a Good Night’s Sleep

Whether you’re moving into a new home or redecorating a place you’ve lived in for a while, it’s important to make sure every room is fit for purpose. This includes the bedroom. While many people use their bedroom as a sanctuary during the day as well as a place to sleep, the primary purpose of a bedroom is to allow you to sleep properly.

With this in mind, here are a few tips to help you create a bedroom that you can sleep comfortably in.

Temperature Control

One of the most effective ways to improve your sleep is to improve the temperature in your bedroom. While everyone is different, people generally sleep best in a cool, dark room. The recommended ambient temperature for sleeping is between 60-67°F, which is cooler than most rooms during the day.

Even if you do sleep in a room that’s too hot or cold, you will find that you don’t sleep as well as you would in ideal conditions, as you might have less high-quality sleep and more disturbed sleep patterns.

Lighting

As well as a cool room, your bedroom should be dark while you’re asleep. Think of it as a cave, where you want as little stimulation as possible.

It’s a good idea to get blackout curtains or blinds for your bedroom to reduce natural light, especially during the summer months. You should also look into adjustable lighting so you can dim the lights in your bedroom in the evening. This allows you to relax before bed.

Some people also use light to wake up in the morning by slowly increasing the light levels in their room, simulating a natural daylight pattern.

Wall Colors and Decor

Believe it or not, the color of the walls in your room can impact how well you sleep. Brighter, more garish colors might make it harder to sleep because they reflect light much better, making your room seem lighter. Likewise, overly busy wallpaper can be distracting.

Try to pick relaxing colors for your room and, when putting up decor and wall art, consider pieces that make you feel more restful. While there’s nothing wrong with a bit of decoration in your bedroom, it should make you feel more comfortable.

Soft Furnishings

Soft furnishings can transform a blank room into a bedroom of your dreams. Your bed is by far the most important part of your bedroom, and it should be carefully designed to allow you to sleep better.

It’s a good idea to try out your mattress before buying it, so you can make sure it’s the right balance between firmness and softness for you. If you’re sharing a bed but have different preferences, consider a mattress topper to allow both parties to sleep more comfortably.

You should also invest in bed duvets and covers, as they impact both how your bed looks and how well you sleep. There’s nothing better than a cozy bed in a nice, cool room for a good night’s sleep.
