A Guide to Decluttering Your Living Space

A Guide to Decluttering Your Living Space

Decluttering your living space is important because, like many parts of your home, if you allow the clutter to build, it ends up competing for the space and freedom to move that you need in your living space.

When it comes to your living space in particular, you want to stay on top of regular declutters in order to improve its appearance and its functionality.

With that being said, here is a helpful guide to decluttering your living space.

  1. Go room-by-room

The mistakes that people often make when they’re attempting to declutter their homes are trying to take it on all at once.

If you’re decluttering your whole property all at once, then you’re likely to get easily overwhelmed by it all, skipping sections of a room and not decluttering it properly.

With that being said, in order to be efficient, it’s best to go room-by-room rather than doing anything else too strenuous.

2. Allocate chuck, sell, and donate boxes

When decluttering your living space, it’s a good idea to assemble some boxes or bags that are allocated individually. This could be things you’re looking to dispose of, items you want to sell, and belongings you think would do best in another home through donation.

By organizing your boxes or bags in this manner, you make it all a lot easier to navigate when you’re looking to sell a bunch of your belongings. No need to rifle through boxes or bags trying to look for something when you know it’s in one of the bags you’ve labelled.

3. Make use of storage solutions in and outside of the home

Storage solutions are definitely something to look at when it comes to decluttering your living space. Ideally, you want a mixture of hidden storage, multi-functional storage, and furniture, as well as off-property solutions like a climate controlled storage unit.

These storage solutions are definitely something to think about when it comes to freeing up the space around your living areas so that it’s a lot more functional as a result.

4. Aim to reduce the number of items in the space by half

When it comes to decluttering, always have the 50% rule in mind. Aim to reduce the number of items in each room by half, where possible. You may find that certain items of furniture or home decor simply don’t suit the space anymore, and therefore, you could get away with getting rid of that clutter.

You should look at spending a good amount of time in each room you’re decluttering in order to be efficient with your decluttering efforts. Make sure that with every new item you bring into the home, you’re discarding, selling, or donating another.

5. Use the Marie Kondo method

Finally, it’s a good idea to make use of methods recommended by the decluttering and organizational experts. The Marie Kondo method is a popular one because it focuses on looking at an item and figuring out whether it sparks joy in you or not. If it doesn’t, then it might not be something you should have in your home.

With these tips, you’ll be decluttering your living spaces with efficiency and ease.
