How To Create Extra Space In Your Bijou Home

How To Create Extra Space In Your Bijou Home

Most homeowners wish they had extra space. However, the problem can be particularly bad for owners of bijou homes – those that are a little smaller than the norm.

If that’s you, don’t worry. In this post, we take a look at some of the simple ways you can create extra space in your property and get the lifestyle that you want.

Keep Your Windows Open

If you want to create an impression of space in your home, keep your windows open, particularly during the summer months. Not only does it add a nice breeze, but sunlight also reflects off the glass and into your rooms.

In some apartments, you can open casement windows inwards. When the light hits them, they will refract it around the room, creating more illumination.

Use Light Playfully

Lighting is a great tool for making a property feel larger than it is. If you have smaller rooms, don’t light them from the ceiling. Instead, rely more on standing lamps and spotlights. These break up the way you illuminate your rooms, helping to add height and mystery.

Store Your Belongings In Your Furniture

When you live in a small space, you need to take advantage of every space-saving opportunity that comes your way. That’s why it’s such a good idea to store your possessions in your furniture.

One idea is to keep an ottoman in your living room and keep it for all your books, magazines, electronics and TV remotes. You can also decorate your spaces with beautiful sideboards and chests that have drawers and openings to store more of your belongings.

Keep The Bathroom Clutter-Free

Clutter in small bathrooms is a big no-no. It makes them feel claustrophobic and stressful.

To keep clutter to a minimum, install a mirrored medicine cabinet on the wall. This way, you can use it to keep all of your bathroom items out of sight and out of mind.

Hide Extra Clothes Under The Bed

If you don’t have room for all your clothes in the closet, you can hide them under the bed. Today, there are many solutions on the market that let you do this (you don’t just have to grab some plastic tubs). These boxes are specially shaped for the height of your bed, allowing you to keep as much stuff underneath them as possible.

Play With The Purpose Of Your Rooms

Even though the architect had a purpose for all your rooms in mind, you don’t have to follow it. Instead, you’re free to adjust the layout in your bijou home as you see fit.

For instance, if you don’t use the second bedroom, convert it into an office so that you can work from home. If the lounge isn’t serving you, turn it into an extra place for guests to stay.

Add The Right Amount Of Furniture

Tailor the size of your furniture to your rooms. If you have a big house, you can afford to dedicate a lot of space to cabinets, tables and chairs. However, if you are more limited, you need smaller solutions. Keep your furniture sparse and minimal so that you can generate extra space.
